DBC Rewind: Tiger outduels Vijay in an instant classic

As another week passes, we inch closer to Labor Day weekend, which means only one thing for the usually quiet town of Norton, Massachusetts. The Deutsche Bank Championship will be returning to town, bringing with it all of the action and entertainment of professional golf.

The annual championship drew enormous crowds in 2006. That year’s championship saw fierce back-and-forth competition between Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh.

During the final round, Tiger took command on the front nine, making two eagles and four birdies and capturing the momentum. Tiger could feel the switch after the third hole.

“I made eagle there and just got all the momentum,” Tiger said. “I got back two shots, instead of basically feeling all square.”

Tiger continued to outplay Vijay and ultimately came away with the victory, hoisting the Wedgewood Trophy.

The following year marked the beginning of a new era for the Deutsche Bank Championship as it became the third leg of the FedExCup Playoffs.

When asked about the changes to the championship at the time, Tiger expressed his excitement.

“We’re going to have the best players on our TOUR; it’s the third leg of our playoff series, so I think it will be, it’s huge for us to be a part of that,” Tiger said in 2006. “I expect to have probably the best field of whoever assembled here next year.”
