Throughout its 100-year history, The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been a beacon of learning and education for all — a sentiment shared by the Tiger Woods Foundation. It’s fitting that this national historic landmark is home to our 20th anniversary event, “A Celebration of Unexpected Champions.” On Oct. 20, Tiger Woods, along with distinguished guests and friends of the Tiger Woods Foundation, will come together at the iconic library to not only celebrate our supporters and scholars, but to share our plans to reach millions of children in the coming years.
Sharing the same grounds as a Revolutionary War battlefield, the NYPL is known as one of New York’s most visited sites. The prominent Stephen A. Schwarzman building is the cornerstone landmark of the library located on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Well known for its two 11-foot lions, nicknamed Patience and Fortitude, guarding the building’s entrance, the felines’ presence is symbolic as much as it is aesthetic. During the 1930s, Mayor Fiorello La Guardia established these lions’ names to symbolize characteristics he wanted New Yorkers to hold throughout the time of the Great Depression.
Dating back to 1961, The New York Public Library has made appearances in films such as “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Ghostbusters,” “Spiderman,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” “The Thomas Crown Affair,” “Sex and the City” and “The Adjustment Bureau.” It has also hosted some of the most revolutionary fashion shows from designers such as Chanel, Victoria Beckham, David Yurman and Isaac Mizrahi. Throughout its history, countless extraordinary events and special occasions have been staged at the NYPL.
The building’s interior and exterior artistic design delivers an incredible backdrop. Astor Hall, which will house TWF’s reception, is embellished with white marble from Vermont, highlighting its high arched bays and vaulted ceilings — perfect for an astonishing lighting effect within the room. The Celeste Bartos Forum features a breathtaking 30-foot-high glass and cast-iron dome, making it the perfect place for guests to savor NYC culinary excellence and be inspired by the evening’s program.
Today, the NYPL is a proactive center for education, providing extraordinary resources available to all, a fitting location for the Tiger Woods Foundation to celebrate 20 years and launch our ambitious expansion plan to reach millions of students around the world. For the last two decades, we’ve equipped students with the ability to exceed any and all expectations, and we’re excited to celebrate this monumental milestone in this beautiful, iconic landmark. It truly is the perfect setting for what is sure to be an unbelievable evening!
