The Earl Woods Scholars gather for a group photo after celebrating the graduating class of 2020 at the 10th Annual Winter Workshop in Anaheim, CA.

TGR Foundation kicks off each year with Winter Workshop, a signature event of the Earl Woods Scholar Program that unites students, mentors and friends of the foundation at the flagship TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim, CA. A reflection of the program’s growth over the last ten years, this year’s event saw record attendance Thursday, January 2 – Saturday, January 4.

Through a host of scheduled personal and professional development workshops, the program prepared underclassmen college students for success during their year ahead and celebrated with seniors that will graduate in the class of 2020 during a luncheon on Friday afternoon.

Earl Woods Scholar Jessica Rivera reflects on her journey with TGR Foundation over the course of her academic career as she prepares to graduate from Stanford University.

For many, the luncheon is a highlight of the year as graduating seniors present a speech to reflect on their college experiences, emphasize elements that fueled their success and share their plans for the future.

“I look at this day with so much hope and optimism,” said Dr. Katherine Bihr, Vice President of Programs and Education. “I want to congratulate the scholars and their parents that are here. Their love and support got us through.”

While most scholars became a part of the family through the Earl Woods Scholar Program, several joined programs at the Learning Lab as early as 5th grade.

“Coming to the Lab every year has been a reminder that I’m not alone and that I’m worthy,” said David Garcia. “Reaching a destination is only as important as the value you put on the journey.”

Throughout their visit to Southern California, scholars had the opportunity to connect with their peers and learn how to address challenges, overcome obstacles and gain support as they move toward graduation and their professional careers.

Earl Woods Scholar Alumnus Tim Nguyen addresses scholars during a young professionals’ panel and shares on his journey from being a first-generation college graduate to becoming the first doctor in his family.

Topics ranging from networking and social media to exploring graduate school and building or updating résumés gave students tools, tips and best practices to continue to fuel their success. Students also participated in mock interviews, engaged with young professionals during a panel and break-out sessions and were fitted for gifted suits to add to their professional wardrobe. A closing talent show highlighted the students’ gifts beyond academia and left them with lasting memories.

The work that we do here makes a difference,” said Rick Singer, President and CEO, TGR Foundation. “These scholars are living our mission. They are living our values. They are pursuing their passions.”
