When I first arrived at Berkeley, I was eager to explore the opportunities that came with being in such a new environment. As a first-generation Mexican-American, the world of engineering was completely new to me.

Internships became my way of discovering these different industries, each with its own culture, work-life balance and challenges.

How diversity enhances power of education, builds pipeline for women in STEM

Gender disparities in STEM fields have long been a concern in the education and workforce sectors. Despite progress made in recent years, there is still a significant underrepresentation of women in these fields. Women make up 34% of the STEM workforce and less than 25% of STEM majors in colleges and universities, according to the American Association of University Women. At TGR Foundation, we are committed to building a world where opportunity is universal and potential is limitless.

One of the ways that we are addressing gender disparity in STEM is through programs at our TGR Learning Labs centered around STEAM education, which integrates the arts into science, technology, engineering and math subjects.

TGR Foundation, Providence recognize high school students addressing community health needs

High school students across three schools in the Anaheim Union High School District were recently selected by a panel of judges from Providence as winners of the 2023-2024 Career-Connected Learning Program Student Showcase.

In January students participating in the health care pathway of the district’s Regional Occupational Program received the results of Providence’s 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment. Working in teams, the students were tasked with choosing one of the needs identified, supplementing the results with further research and developing a presentation on recommended ways to meet the needs chosen. The winning teams provided solutions to elderly neglect, teen mental health and healthcare system strategies.

Teacher Appreciation Week offers a great opportunity to look for ways to celebrate these pivotal agents of change year-round. From my initial role as a high school biology teacher in South Los Angeles, to founding and scaling a charter school network serving thousands of underestimated students in Los Angeles, to my current role at TGR Foundation driving innovative learning spaces and STEAM education programming nationally at TGR Learning Labs I have witnessed firsthand the profound influence that empowered educators wield in molding tomorrow’s leaders.
