2022 Year In Review: The Relaunch of Our People, Programs and Spaces

2022 was a year of transition and renewal. Our goal was to relaunch TGR Foundation, with a focus on our people, programs, and spaces. As I reflect on this past year, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for having students back in the renovated TGR Learning Lab and for the community members who stepped forward in joining our mission and vision for the future.

Champion Spotlight: Alma Gutierrez

Empowered by her experiences as a TGR Learning Lab alumna and first-generation college graduate, Alma Gutierrez has been a champion for students navigating their college and career journeys through TGR Foundation’s Earl Woods Scholar Program for the last six years.

What started as a visit to the Learning Lab with her golf team at Western High School turned into a decade of involvement that helped Alma change the trajectory of her life and her family’s legacy.

While preparing for the relaunch of the flagship TGR Learning Lab, Alma reflected on her journey and the foundation’s impact on her life.

A Celebration of Community

Community Fest Welcome

This past Saturday we celebrated the relaunch of the TGR Learning Lab with our community of students, families, educators, and supporters. Community Fest was a day full of fun for the entire family. Guests had the opportunity to see the upgrades of the TGR Learning Lab campus, experience our programs in action, learn more about […]

Champion Spotlight: Amelie Jimenez

With curiosity, determination and interest in many subjects, Amelie Jimenez discovered the path to chemical engineering through programs offered at the TGR Learning Lab. While excelling academically and being involved in many extracurricular activities, Amelie expanded her knowledge, skills and experiences through TGR Foundation programs from 7th grade through the end of her senior year of high school.

As she navigates her collegiate journey at the University of California, Berkeley, what she values most from her experience is the confidence to explore opportunities without fear. While preparing for her midterms she took time to share more about her journey and what she’s looking forward to in the years ahead.

Champion Spotlight: Miguel Jimenez

Miguel Jimenez is a senior at Kennedy High School. With a lifelong interest in science, participating in classes at the TGR Learning Lab allowed him to broaden his understanding and discover aligned career paths while building transferrable skills.

While balancing academics and extra-curricular activities including honor band and sports, Miguel enjoys sharing what he’s learned with younger student-athletes on his track and cross-country teams.

TGR Foundation celebrates relaunch

Tiger Woods had a vision inspired by the tragic events of 9/11, “to create a safe space for students to learn, grow & chase after their dreams.” From this vision came the flagship TGR Learning Lab, which opened in 2006 to students and families from Anaheim and the surrounding communities.   As a child, Tiger’s […]

TGR Foundation Announces New Educational Programming Leadership

TGR Foundation announced John Lee as Vice President, Programs and Education. Lee, an experienced student-focused education leader, will oversee TGR Foundation’s education programs and staff responsible for delivering educational opportunities and resources to students from under-resourced communities in Southern California and beyond.

TGR Foundation exposes elementary students to computer science, Raspberry Pi

With support from Broadcom Foundation, TGR Foundation partnered with the Centralia Elementary School District to pilot a two-week course introducing fifth and sixth graders to computer science using the Raspberry Pi. From February through May, TGR Foundation’s flagship TGR Learning Lab instructors were joined by Centralia Elementary School District access coordinators to visit all schools in the district and implement the curriculum with students. Through the program, more than a thousand students were exposed to computer science concepts and developed computer science skills using the Raspberry Pi.

How volunteers impact TGR Foundation’s students, programs and mission

Over the past two years serving as the volunteer coordinator, I have interacted with the TGR Learning Lab volunteers and interns, from recruitment to supervision. I have enjoyed the working relationships that have blossomed. My philosophy when supervising anyone is to allow meaningful interactions and effective communication. By doing so, I have gained much knowledge of who our volunteers are, what their goals are and what ambitions they have. Doing this allows me to be more knowledgeable about how to support them in their roles best and share any opportunities that will enable them to grow and prosper.

TGR Learning Lab celebrates ‘Sweet 16’, continues work with underserved youth

As I look back on the 16 years since the TGR Learning Lab opened its doors to students and families in Anaheim, California, I am immensely proud of the hard work, growth and student success that has taken place. Thousands of underserved students have walked through our doors into a safe space that has given them opportunities they might not have had otherwise. The Learning Lab has helped students find their passion and pursue it, experience innovation and foster creativity all while being supported by caring adults to mentor and guide them on their journey.
