As a member of the Western High School Women’s Golf Team, Alma Gutierrez discovered the TGR Learning Lab Anaheim with the rest of her team as they took advantage of access to free equipment, clinics and a short course for practice. What she didn’t expect was to discover a world of opportunities beyond the sport.
After golf requirements as a student athlete were met, she continued to participate in classes and workshops that shaped her path to higher education and a career paying it forward. Alma’s journey with the Foundation continued through high school graduation, college education and into her career. As we celebrate 30 years of driving dreams together, presented by EY, she took time to share more about her career and life since becoming a full-time professional.
Where do you currently live and work?
I currently live and work in Southern California. More specifically, I live in Stanton and work in Anaheim (soon to be Irvine) as a director for TGR Foundation’s Earl Woods Scholar Program and college access initiatives.
How did you end up in your career? Describe your path.
I began working at the TGR Learning Lab in 2009, during the summer before my senior year of high school. While attending Cal State Fullerton, I continued working part-time at the Learning Lab. After graduating from college, I knew I wanted to build my career with TGR Foundation. I had always admired the Earl Woods Scholar Program team – their events, mission and the incredible support they provided to scholars. When an opportunity to join the team became available, I applied right away. The rest is history.
Describe an average day in your life as a director of the Earl Woods Scholar Program.
I do not think I have ever had the same day twice, and that is something I truly appreciate about my role. On a typical day, I spend time reviewing and responding to emails, while also participating in meetings throughout the week to plan events and connect with scholars and mentors. The variety keeps the work engaging and rewarding.
What is the most rewarding element of your career?
I love working with our community. Having grown up in the area, my work is especially meaningful because I can see the direct impact we have on students in Anaheim. I am passionate about helping students feel supported and empowered, and I strive to create a safe, welcoming space where they can explore their college and career aspirations with confidence.
What did you dream of as a TGR Learning Lab member that you’ve seen come true?
I have always said that I did not want just a job – I wanted a career that would bring purpose and meaning to my life every day. I am grateful to say that I feel like I am living that dream. The opportunity to make a positive impact on students and support their growth makes my work incredibly rewarding.
What accomplishment(s) on your college and career journey are you most proud of?
I am proud to be the first person in my family to graduate from a four-year university. That achievement inspired my siblings to continue their educational journeys by transferring from community college to their respective California State University campuses, where they ultimately earned their degrees. I am also the first member of my family to earn a master’s degree, a milestone that I am incredibly proud of. Go Broncos!
What is your favorite memory with TGR Foundation?
I will never forget how I felt as a TGR Learning Lab member. I always felt safe, supported, loved and seen. Those feelings and experiences have stayed with me, and I will carry them in my heart forever.
How do you continue to learn as a professional?
Outside of work, I enjoy listening to podcasts and reading books focused on higher education and professional development. I am always looking for opportunities to continue learning and growing. At work, I am fortunate to learn from my supervisors and peers, who continue to inspire me and help me expand my knowledge.
If you could write a letter to your younger self, what would you say to her?
Dear Alma,
I know you have no idea what the future holds, but keep trusting God. Never be afraid to ask for help or ask a question – the worst someone will say is “no,” but at least you advocated for yourself. Time goes by fast, so always appreciate those around you. Stay humble, dream big and always give back. Never close the door to the person behind you, and always give a helping hand to those who need it. Also, invest wisely – not just money, but your time and energy. You got this, kid!
What advice would you give to students who are interested in your career?
Work hard, but never let your passion burn out. In higher education, it’s easy to experience moments of burnout, so it’s important to always reconnect with your purpose and remember the impact you are making.
What’s one resource that helped you drive your dreams forward that every student should have?
Building and maintaining a strong network is vital – learning how to connect with people can open doors to meaningful opportunities. I started my position as a part-time employee, but many of the opportunities that shaped my career came through the relationships and connections I built along the way.
What are you most looking forward to in the next five years?
I would love to be a homeowner!
What are the top three places to visit in Orange County?
When I am not working, I enjoy making memories at Disneyland, spending time at my local parish, Saint Irenaeus Catholic Church and relaxing with the beautiful sunset views in Seal Beach.
What are three unique items in your work bag or at your desk?
I love my desk space because it reflects my personality. Three unique items you’ll find at my desk are:
- My magnet collection – Whether I’ve traveled somewhere myself or someone has brought one back for me, I love collecting magnets from different cities, states and countries. Each one has a special memory attached to it.
- A small wooden trinket box from Morelia – I purchased this during a trip, and I now use it as a Rolodex. It’s both functional and a reminder of a special place.
- My snack drawer – I always keep a mix of sweet and savory snacks nearby. Everyone in the office knows I am the ultimate snack person!
What are your top three hobbies, and where does golf rank in your list?
I’m always trying to discover new hobbies, but right now I enjoy cooking, taking on home improvement projects, and getting back into fitness. I no longer play golf, but I still have a great appreciation for the game!
