Twenty years ago, the Earl Woods Scholar Program was just beginning to take shape. In May 2006, following the passing of Earl Woods, TGR Foundation received an outpouring of unsolicited donations in his honor. From that moment, Tiger had a clear and purposeful vision to create something lasting that would reflect who Earl was and what he stood for. Â
I had the privilege of developing the program from its earliest days, transforming intention into impact. I remember the conversations that followed, and it was from those early discussions with colleagues that the vision for the Earl Woods Scholar Program came to life, grounded in the Woods family motto to share and care. What began as a small, deeply personal tribute has grown into a dynamic and far-reaching community.Â
In spring 2007, we welcomed our inaugural cohort of five scholars in Orange County. Over the years, the program steadily expanded, supporting students in Washington, D.C. and Boston in 2008, progressing into the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region by 2012, and later reaching New York City, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. Each milestone represented more than growth; it reflected a deepening commitment to provide access, opportunity and support for students from under-resourced communities. This growth came with lessons, adjustments and a continued commitment to meeting students where they are and helping them reach their goals.Â
Along the way, our impact was extended beyond a scholarship; we built an extended family. From early initiatives like one-to-one professional mentorship, our annual Winter Workshop, and graduation celebrations to the launch of family orientations across regions, the program has continuously evolved to meet the needs of our students. Even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the program adapted, ensuring scholars remained connected, supported and prepared for what was ahead. Over time, the program grew bigger than we initially imagined.Â
What has remained constant, however, is the heart of the program: our scholars themselves. Earl Woods Scholars embody the legacy they represent, not only through their academic and professional achievements, but through their commitment to service. They give back, lead with purpose and uplift their communities, carrying forward the values of sharing and caring in meaningful ways.Â
Today, with nearly 350 scholars strong across seven regions, the program stands as a testament to what intentional investment in young people can achieve.Â
And we are not done yet.Â
As we celebrate a 20-year milestone, we are also looking ahead. This year marks an exciting new chapter with the launch of the program in Atlanta and Augusta, expanding our reach and deepening our impact for future generations of scholars.Â
Looking back, it’s incredible to see how far the program has come from those early conversations in 2006. What started as a way to honor Earl has become a lasting legacy, one that continues to open doors and change lives.Â
Happy 20th anniversary to the Earl Woods Scholar Program!Â
