The Deutsche Bank Championship kicked off this morning with the ppening ceremonies, featuring community leaders from the New England area.

12-year-old Abby Matthews led the crowd in a mesmerizing rendition of the National Anthem to lead off the Opening Ceremonies. The “supremely talented,” as emcee of the event and tournament director Mike Antolini described, Matthews has been singing since she was two.

Matthews was followed by the introduction of the tournament’s selected Championship Honorees. The first honoree was Cristina Fernandez, representing the Tiger Woods Foundation and Earl Woods Scholarship Program. There have been 15 Earl Woods scholars in the New England area since 2008. The Earl Woods Scholarship Program has a 100 percent graduation rate.

Ed Hurley of the Hockomock YMCA was the second championship honoree. Hockomock YMCA has been a partner of the Deutsche Bank Championship since the tournament’s inception.

Danielle Sicard, Blue Crew and volunteer chairman of the Deutsche Bank Championship, was the third championship honoree. Sicard oversees more than 1,500 volunteers, 80 percent of which have volunteered at the tournament for over eight years. The tournament could not happen without the Blue Crew.

One Summit and Adam LeReau were also honored. LeReau founded One Summit in 2013 as a result of his combined experience as a Navy SEAL and losing a loved one to cancer. One Summit is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting children battling cancer build courage and confidence through mentor programs with Navy SEALs.

Finally, Salute Military Golf Association was honored for its rehabilitative golf services and experiences to post 9/11 wounded war veterans.

PGA TOUR professional Kevin Streelman, 11-year-old cancer survivor Gidge Farrar of One Summit and Silver Star recipient Sargent Timothy Connors from Salute Military Golf Association hit the ceremonial tee shot to officially begin the Deutsche Bank Championship.
