Carol Kimmelman Memorial Scholarship awarded to TGR Foundation students

Last summer, TGR Foundation welcomed its newest cohort of College Bound Academy students to the TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim. Beyond the two weeks of immersive college prep courses offered by TGR staff, the students had a chance to engage with special guests and friends of the foundation. One such guest was Dr. Jennifer Winward, an instructor at the University of California, San Diego and creator of the online platform, Winward Academy.Through the generosity of Dr. Winward along with the Kimmelman Family Foundation, 100 students including those enrolled in TGR Foundation’s College Bound Academy (CBA) received access to Winward Academy’s award-winning curriculum geared towards ACT and SAT preparation.
Tiger Woods competes for $750K toward education programs

Each week throughout the PGA TOUR Season the MetLife MatchUp recognizes players who have overcome challenging situations on the golf course. Tiger Woods qualified during Genesis Open and advanced to the final round with a chance to earn $750K for TGR Foundation.
College Bound Academy prepares students for journey to higher education

While many incoming high school seniors in Southern California started their summer on vacation or sitting by the pool taking a break from their studies, participants in our annual College Bound Academy spent two weeks preparing for their path to college.
Including admissions and financial aid workshops, campus visits to the Claremont Colleges, guest speakers and training from Disneyland Marketing professionals, the program was packed with opportunities for participating students to gain inspiration, build skills, connect with peers and start their journey to higher education.

Earl Woods Scholars attend Global MindED conference, share key takeaways

In early June, Earl Woods Scholars Michelle Bravo and Cristian Carrasco had an exciting opportunity to attend the Global MindED conference in Denver, Colorado. Committed to creating a diverse talent pipeline through cross-collaboration, the conference united hundreds of educators, entrepreneurs, policymakers and first-generation college students, like Michelle and Cristian. Over three days, the scholars attended numerous panels, keynote presentations and workshops, including a discussion on educational equity featuring TGR Foundation’s Vice President of Programs and Education, Dr. Katherine Bihr. Michelle, a rising senior at The City University of New York’s Lehman College, and Cristian, a rising junior at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) share their takeaways from the conference.
Scholar Voices: 4 Tips for living and thriving with depression

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States; around 7% of all U.S. adults have had at least one major depressive episode. Among the most prevalent demographics of MDD diagnoses are college students like Earl Woods Scholars. Individuals between 18-25 are more likely to have depression. Based on my own experiences with depression, I’m hoping that some of these musings alongside tips I’ve learned along the way might help.
TGR Learning Lab Student Spotlight: My path toward a career in STEM

My earliest memories of the TGR Learning Lab began when I was walking down Gilbert Street from Gauer Elementary School to take part in the week-long, 5th grade field trip. A few years later, I was back for more, enrolling in multiple classes in the after-school program.
Being a first-generation college student comes with high amounts of pressure. I was terrified and nervous about how I was going to figure everything out. Self-doubt often clouded my mind. However, with the support of the TGR Learning Lab, as both a student and a staff member, I was able to find my footing. The TGR Learning Lab equipped me with valuable tools as I transitioned from high school to college.
