2022 Year In Review: The Relaunch of Our People, Programs and Spaces

2022 was a year of transition and renewal. Our goal was to relaunch TGR Foundation, with a focus on our people, programs, and spaces. As I reflect on this past year, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for having students back in the renovated TGR Learning Lab and for the community members who stepped forward in joining our mission and vision for the future.

Champion Spotlight: Alma Gutierrez

Empowered by her experiences as a TGR Learning Lab alumna and first-generation college graduate, Alma Gutierrez has been a champion for students navigating their college and career journeys through TGR Foundation’s Earl Woods Scholar Program for the last six years.

What started as a visit to the Learning Lab with her golf team at Western High School turned into a decade of involvement that helped Alma change the trajectory of her life and her family’s legacy.

While preparing for the relaunch of the flagship TGR Learning Lab, Alma reflected on her journey and the foundation’s impact on her life.

Champion Spotlight: Amelie Jimenez

With curiosity, determination and interest in many subjects, Amelie Jimenez discovered the path to chemical engineering through programs offered at the TGR Learning Lab. While excelling academically and being involved in many extracurricular activities, Amelie expanded her knowledge, skills and experiences through TGR Foundation programs from 7th grade through the end of her senior year of high school.

As she navigates her collegiate journey at the University of California, Berkeley, what she values most from her experience is the confidence to explore opportunities without fear. While preparing for her midterms she took time to share more about her journey and what she’s looking forward to in the years ahead.

Champion Spotlight: Miguel Jimenez

Miguel Jimenez is a senior at Kennedy High School. With a lifelong interest in science, participating in classes at the TGR Learning Lab allowed him to broaden his understanding and discover aligned career paths while building transferrable skills.

While balancing academics and extra-curricular activities including honor band and sports, Miguel enjoys sharing what he’s learned with younger student-athletes on his track and cross-country teams.

TGR Foundation exposes elementary students to computer science, Raspberry Pi

With support from Broadcom Foundation, TGR Foundation partnered with the Centralia Elementary School District to pilot a two-week course introducing fifth and sixth graders to computer science using the Raspberry Pi. From February through May, TGR Foundation’s flagship TGR Learning Lab instructors were joined by Centralia Elementary School District access coordinators to visit all schools in the district and implement the curriculum with students. Through the program, more than a thousand students were exposed to computer science concepts and developed computer science skills using the Raspberry Pi.
