Every year, the Earl Woods Scholarship Program hosts a summer orientation and social for the incoming cohort of scholars and mentors. In June, we traveled to DC, Boston and New York for the orientation and social to sit with the new cohort and discuss the expectations of the scholar and mentor, and what it means to be a mentor. Great conversation was had and stories were shared. The scholars and mentors were bright-eyed and eager to build their relationship.

In Boston, there was even talk of having all six scholars and mentors get together for the Beanpot, which is an ice hockey tournament among the four major colleges in Boston. Coincidentally enough, most of our Boston scholars will be attending these colleges!

After the orientation, we gathered everyone for the summer social. This was a great opportunity for the new Earl Woods Scholars and mentors to connect with the TWF staff and board members, as well as current and past mentors/scholars. The veteran scholars were happy to meet the new cohort and offer their congratulations and words of encouragement!

The new group’s excitement about the program was absolutely contagious! I was beyond thrilled to witness the development of strong relationships. At all three of the socials, I had the chance to step back and watch connections form and hear words of wisdom from veteran scholars, mentors, staff and board members be passed on to the new group. The common sentiment shared between the new and veteran scholars was that everyone in the program becomes family. Everyone bonded over the common goal and passion of helping the scholars succeed and the mission of the foundation.

The summer social events really do reinforce the positive impact the Earl Woods Scholarship Program has on the scholars, mentors, staff, community and families. As a new staff member myself, I am excited to be a part of this cause, and I look forward to many more successful orientations and summer socials to come.
