DoD STEM, TGR Foundation announce third cohort of national educator ambassadors

After a rigorous selection process, TGR Foundation and DOD STEM, recently announced its third cohort of DoD STEM Ambassadors with 22 STEM educators from across the country. Bringing decades of experience, the ambassadors will share and support the DoD’s educational outreach efforts through the Defense STEM Education Consortium (DSEC).  TGR Foundation began managing the collaborative partnership between academia, industry, not-for-profit organizations and government in 2021 and will continue to lead the program for a second year. The DOD STEM Ambassador program aims to broaden STEM literacy and develop a diverse and agile workforce with the technical excellence to defend our nation.

Champion Spotlight: Alma Gutierrez

Empowered by her experiences as a TGR Learning Lab alumna and first-generation college graduate, Alma Gutierrez has been a champion for students navigating their college and career journeys through TGR Foundation’s Earl Woods Scholar Program for the last six years.

NSPA recognizes TGR Foundation as Scholarship Provider of the Year for Earl Woods Scholar Program

The National Scholarship Providers Association announced TGR Foundation as its 2022 Scholarship Provider of the Year during its annual conference on Thursday, October 21.  

Highlighting the success of the Earl Woods Scholar Program, which launched in 2006 to honor the legacy of Tiger Woods’ father, the late Earl Woods, the program supports students from under-resourced communities through financial aid, yearly workshops, a dedicated mentor throughout their college journeys and a host of resources.

Champion Spotlight: Amelie Jimenez

With curiosity, determination and interest in many subjects, Amelie Jimenez discovered the path to chemical engineering through programs offered at the TGR Learning Lab. While excelling academically and being involved in many extracurricular activities, Amelie expanded her knowledge, skills and experiences through TGR Foundation programs from 7th grade through the end of her senior year of high school.

As she navigates her collegiate journey at the University of California, Berkeley, what she values most from her experience is the confidence to explore opportunities without fear. While preparing for her midterms she took time to share more about her journey and what she’s looking forward to in the years ahead.

Champion Spotlight: Miguel Jimenez

Miguel Jimenez is a senior at Kennedy High School. With a lifelong interest in science, participating in classes at the TGR Learning Lab allowed him to broaden his understanding and discover aligned career paths while building transferrable skills.

While balancing academics and extra-curricular activities including honor band and sports, Miguel enjoys sharing what he’s learned with younger student-athletes on his track and cross-country teams.

How TGR Foundation transformed my relationship with professional development

I vividly remember the day I signed up for STEM Studio in desperation for better professional development opportunities while attending a mandatory training that was so terrible, I would have preferred to be at the dentist than in that room. TGR Foundation was a life preserver.   

My initial experience in STEM Studio was so invigorating, it inspired my new journey of professional development. It always places me in the position of an engaged learner. I still use many of the strategies from my initial STEM Studio training in 2018 and keep returning for more.

Pre-College Retreat prepared freshmen Earl Woods Scholars for success 

Each summer before freshmen Earl Woods Scholars begin their collegiate journeys, the program’s pre-college retreat, designed to prepare them for success, provides an array of information and resources throughout the three-day experience.  

 

Joining three cohorts of 18 students from southern California and Washington D.C., the retreat took place primarily at the flagship TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim, CA.

TGR Foundation exposes elementary students to computer science, Raspberry Pi

With support from Broadcom Foundation, TGR Foundation partnered with the Centralia Elementary School District to pilot a two-week course introducing fifth and sixth graders to computer science using the Raspberry Pi. From February through May, TGR Foundation’s flagship TGR Learning Lab instructors were joined by Centralia Elementary School District access coordinators to visit all schools in the district and implement the curriculum with students. Through the program, more than a thousand students were exposed to computer science concepts and developed computer science skills using the Raspberry Pi.
